Celebrating others is one of my favorite pastimes. It’s your birthday? I’ll get the cake. Promotion at work? Cue the confetti, I’m already planning a party. Newly engaged? Let’s pop the champagne while I help pick wedding colors. Srewo, as a self-proclaimed celebration specialist, why do I struggle to celebrate myself? I know I’m not alone here. Today I’m sharing a few tips on the importance of celebrating your successes!
My day typically consists of submitting 20+ applications (known as “pitches” in the blogging world) to potential partnerships. Of those, I get really excited if and when I land 1. That’s right, one. My husband is the first to announce “did you hear what Nicollette landed at work today?!” when gathered with friends and family. For the longest time, I felt like going into detail was bragging. Blogging is an industry so many people still struggle to understand, so “getting paid to take photos” or “but how is that a real job” wasn’t a fun conversation to have each time I achieved a win. Over time, I’ve learned to embrace questions, along with the excitement that follows.
WHY CELEBRATING YOUR SUCCESS IS IMPORTANT
IT’S THE BOOST YOU NEEDED: Sometimes it takes a big toll on your confidence when you’re really focused on pitching and don’t make the cut with a brand. After applying to so many campaigns (similar to a person submitting resumes and cover letters for a job), receiving a proposal can have you ready to shout from the rooftops! So, what’s holding you back?! It’s exciting, so share the news!
IT INSPIRES OTHERS: For the longest time, I thought success in blogging meant getting all of the campaigns. It meant the world to hear real-life testimonials from others on how few campaigns they actually landed. Sharing your successes isn’t just to inspire you, but it reaches others, too.
YOUR (REAL) FRIENDS CARE: As a blogger, I don’t have ‘co-workers’ to do the bragging and celebrating like a traditional office setting. What a disservice to your friends when you silently celebrate! Allow yourself to be just as excited for these wins as you were within a mainstream ‘career.’ Just because people don’t always understand your job doesn’t mean they aren’t excited for you.
SIZE DOESN’T MATTER: It’s easy to celebrate the big wins, but what about smaller victories? Making networking connections, sharing a post that gets more engagement than usual or getting a compliment from brand partners on your work, it all matters. Measuring our successes only on the big wins discounts the hard work, time and effort we put in on a daily basis. Small win celebrations deserve a text to your bff, a bottle of champagne or an unnecessary trip to Target.
YOU’RE BETTER WHEN YOU LOVE YOURSELF: Cheesy, but true. Self-celebrations make you a better friend, partner, parent and a happier version of you. There’s something to be said about the person and friend that prefers complimenting others, but allow your circle to love on you, too.
Whether you’re in the blogging world, chugging along in your 9-5 office setting, a busy stay at home mama or trying to find your footing, celebrating yourself is a must. Share your successes, inspire others and give yourself a much-needed pat on the back. So, grab the champagne and share your successes! How do you celebrate?!
